If you are looking for a unique oral piercing, a Smiley, also called an Oral Frenum piercing, is definitely one we get excited about. With a smiley piercing, the piercing goes through the small piece of skin called the frenulum which connects your gums to your upper lip. This piercing gets its name because it is only obvious when you smile. If you are intrigued by smiley piercings, here is everything you need to know before taking the plunge and committing.
Smiley piercing jewelry comes in several different styles and is usually made from titanium or surgical grade stainless steel. Some of the most popular types of jewelry for this piercing include:
Because of the piercing’s location, it may be difficult to achieve if your frenulum is too small to accommodate. Complications may also arise if you have braces, dental sealants or gum disease. We do not recommend this piercing if you have dental or oral issues.
After your are able to change your jewelry, the diameter can make a big difference. A larger diameter hoop or horseshoe will be a lot more obvious than a curved barbell or a very small horseshoe.
When cared for properly, your smiley piercing can possibly be healed enough to change the jewelry within six to eight weeks. However, we always say that any piercing can take six months to one year to fully heal. This means that you don’t want to leave your jewelry out for any extended period of time until then. Although you may notice mild pain and swelling after the piercing, the discomfort should only last a few days. To prevent infection, be sure to follow the aftercare regime that your Body Piercer will go over with you and immediately seek medical attention if you feel the piercing is infected. Signs of infection may include one or all of the following; pain and swelling become severe, your piercing hurts worse than when you originally got it pierced, or green discharge and/or a foul odor become apparent.
During the healing period, you should rinse your mouth two to three times a day with ‘Swish-It!’ mouth rinse. It is easiest to remember if you swish right after brushing your teeth. You can also put our non-iodized sea salt into a water bottle and bring with you to clean your piercing throughout the day. For the first few days of healing, you should make it a priority not to smoke, drink alcohol, or touch the jewelry itself. Also be sure to avoid spicy, acidic and crunchy foods that can irritate the area.
