Septum Piercing

Septum piercings have long been visible both in pop culture and counter-culture. Naturally, if the only piercing experience a person has had is their ears, some questions are inevitable, and we’re happy to answer them.

What is a Septum Piercing?SeptumPageContent3

A septum piercing is one that passes through the nasal septum dividing the left and right nostrils. Regardless of the actual jewelry involved, septum piercings have been part of virtually every culture worldwide in one form or another over the course of recorded history. Septum piercings are currently one of the more popular piercings for both women and men.

Does a Septum Piercing Hurt?

If it’s done right, the amount of pain and discomfort from the actual piercing process is generally low. Many people think that the septum is pierced through the cartilage. In reality, it is pierced through what we call “the sweet spot”, a small area of tissue that is significant thinner than the cartilage portion of the septum. Doing a septum piercing requires skill on the part of the technician and cooperation on the part of the piercee. It’s important to remain still so the piercer can make sure all angles are correct so that you come out with a perfectly straight and beautiful new septum piercing!

Assuming ideal conditions and a well-kept aftercare regimen, one can expect a septum piercing to take six to eight weeks or longer to heal up properly. This time frame is when you can change your initial jewelry that you were pierced with. You can still expect more time for healing as piercings heal in peak and valley patterns. They will be seemingly healed then go back to being red and maybe a little sore. Healing times may vary depending on the person, how diligent they are with aftercare and other external factors. Doing your change out too soon can lead to an extended healing time, so be sure to consult a piercer before you change your jewelry.

Is There Anything That Can Speed the Healing Process?Septum3-WebsitePort2

There’s nothing that can be done to speed up the process. There are, however, a lot of things that can slow the process down. Since the nose is a little more involved in vital processes than, say, the earlobe, tragus, navel or nipple, a certain degree of extra attention is required when working to keep it clean.
Saline solutions made with sea salt (not table salt) are ideal to help keep your new septum piercing clean. It’s also generally advised to be careful when blowing your nose just after getting a septum piercing. Avoid catching your clothing on your jewelry when pulling tops or sweaters over your head, and be careful if you use a cloth to wash your face.

Who gets septum piercings?

There are many styles of jewelry to wear in septum piercings which is a main reason they have become so popular. A lot of people go for snug fitting hoops while some go for intricate septum clickers making their septum piercing a fashion statement.
