Who Can’t Get Their Tongue Pierced?

If your tongue is too short (if it can’t stick out of your mouth or can’t stick out very far), or if the webbing connecting your tongue to the bottom of your mouth is too close to the front of your tongue, you would not be a good candidate for a tongue piercing.

Sometimes people have a large vein in the center of their tongue which is called the lingual vein. You can look in a mirror, lift your tongue up, and check to see if you have one that is visible/close to the surface. If this is the case, you can still get the piercing, it will just be done at a slight angle in attempt to miss piercing through the vein. Your piercer will check for this and thoroughly explain before piercing you.

How Long Does a Tongue Piercing Take to Heal?

Tongue piercings are generally one of the least painful and fastest healing of piercings. Tongue piercings can take between 6 months to 1 year or longer to fully heal but they are usually healed enough to change the jewelry after 6-8 weeks.

Aftercare Tips for a Tongue Piercing

Tongue and Snake Eyes Piercings – Almost Famous Body PiercingAfter getting the new piercing, you should be able to brush your teeth normally. Make sure you have a clean toothbrush. When you get pierced at Almost Famous Body Piercing, we send you home with a bottle of our “Switsh-It!” mouth rinse as part of the aftercare you purchase. This is an alcohol free mouth wash that is specially formulated for oral piercings as many brands of mouthwash contain alcohol that can aggravate the piercing and prolong healing.

You’ll use the mouth rinse twice a day and then you’ll swish with a water and sea salt mixture after eating, smoking, or drinking anything besides bottled water. Sucking on ice cubes can help bring down any swelling in the first few days of the piercing. Avoid smoking, kissing, and drinking alcohol while the piercing heals, as these can increase the risk of infection. You should be able to eat normally after your piercing, though it’s recommended to stay away from hot beverages and spicy foods.
